Spotlight On Sites - Ball Road, Llanrumney, Cardiff

In 2018 we established a new enforcement site on Ball Road, Llanrumney, Cardiff, which is a 30mph road. This mobile camera site was established when a speed survey conducted at the time an average speed of 32mph with 60% of vehicles travelling in excess of the speed limit and 4.7% of vehicles travelling at speeds of 45mph or more.

There had been a few collisions at the site in the preceding three years with 5 people sustaining minor injuries. The high recorded speeds and collision history warranted enforcement on safety grounds.

Ball Road is situated on the West side of Llanrumney and is a heavily populated residential area.

Since the site was established the average speed of the traffic has reduced to 29mph. Vehicles exceeding the speed limit has fallen to 38% and the number of vehicles travelling at 45mph or more is now 1.4%.

There are still a few minor injury collisions occurring and in 2019 there was one collision resulting in serious injury.

Whilst there has been a significant reduction in recorded speeds continuing enforcement will be required in order to reduce the speeds further and improve safety at the site.
