Spotlight on Sites - A470

Established in 2002, our mobile camera site on the A470, from Brecon to Merthyr/Llwyn Y Celyn is a 60mph road.

A speed survey conducted at this time showed an average speed of 51mph with 14% travelling at speeds in excess of the limit and 1% at speeds of 75mph or more.

Of more concern was the fact that there had been 4 fatal casualties and a further 3 people receiving serious injury on this stretch of road, there had also been further collisions where 7 people had received minor injuries.

The A470 is a busy trunk road in a rural area of Wales. The road has a number of blind bends and rises and is used by slow moving commercial and agricultural vehicles.

Since the site was established average speeds have risen to 55mph with 23% of vehicles exceeding the speed limit and 2% travelling at speeds of 75mph or over.

Fortunately there has been a reduction in serious collisions with none occurring since 2015. The site has achieved its aim of reducing road casualties but with the increased speeds recorded continued enforcement is required to ensure that the road remains safe for future users.

Our objective is to reduce casualties and fatalities on the roads of Wales. We enforce in order to keep all road users safe and whenever you see one of our mobile enforcement vans at a location, know that we are at the right place, at the right time, for the right reason.
