Speed System Supporting Compliance In Swansea

Work has been progressing over the last few years to introduce a new speed enforcement system on Carmarthen Road, Swansea which included upgrading old camera technology and installing new cameras where there was evidence of collisions.

Over the last few months, with the country in lockdown, traffic volumes may have fallen but on roads across the country we saw a large increase in the level of speed those breaking the speed limits were travelling at.

Following installation of the cameras by Swansea City Council, using Welsh Government Road safety grant funding, GoSafe have now finalised the back office equipment installation and necessary training to bring the system into operation as soon as possible.

The final phase of the installation of the new system was however delayed due to the Covid-19 Pandemic and the subsequent lockdown. But, after discussing alternative means of training with the training providers we have now been able to overcome that barrier by delivering the necessary training through assisted online training whilst our staff continue to observe social distancing.

Teresa Ciano, GoSafe Partnership Manager said:

“This system was introduced as part of a major investment to improve road safety in these locations. We would like to remind the public that the cameras at signalised junctions have a dual functionality to detect speeding as well as red light offences. With the cameras going live this week we hope to see more compliance with the speed limits which will make the roads safer for all who use them. We would urge the public to take extra care on the roads, to limit the likelihood of a collision which would increase the burden on our public services and the NHS”

A few weeks ago saw the start of the National Police Chiefs Council (NPCC) Speeding Campaign and with higher speeds being recorded on roads across Wales, there couldn’t be a better time to initiate a new system to better encourage compliance with the speed limit. The new systems on Carmarthen Road, Swansea will become fully operational and active this week.

All speed enforcement camera sites are carefully selected and adhere to strict criteria; all serve to reduce speeding and collisions with the most successful cameras being the ones that record the LEAST amount of offences.
