Spotlight on Sites - A4216, Swansea

The A4216, Broadway in Swansea is one of GoSafe's Mobile Camera Sites.

An initial speed survey was conducted in 2003 and showed an average speed of 30mph, but 15% of traffic was travelling at speeds over 35mph with 1% of traffic travelling at speeds over 45mph.

There had been a number of minor collisions at the site with several people receiving minor injuries and one collision resulting in serious injury.

This 30mph road is a busy route into Swansea with high volumes of traffic using the route to access the University and Gower College and passes a hospital.

Since our enforcement started at this site, speeds have steadily decreased by small increments. The latest speed survey conducted in 2019 showed an average speed of 27mph with 85% of vehicles travelling at 33.7mph or less. Vehicles travelling at speeds of 45mph or more have reduced to 0.4%.

There have been two further serious collision at the site (2005 & 2015) and a number of minor collisions. Enforcement has proved effective in reducing speed but further enforcement is needed in order to address the collisions at the site.
