Spotlight on Sites - A487,Blaenporth

Since Wales entered lockdown, we have seen a reduction in the volume of traffic on our roads. However, we have had reports from all over Wales of an increase in the level of speed those breaking the speed limit were travelling at.

We have received several community concern reports from members of the public, raising their concerns about speeding in their communities. We respond to every community concern report and if the site in question meets our criteria we will enforce at that location.

One site we received a number of reports from both members of the public and from the local Neighbourhood Policing Team was on the A487 at Blaenporth, which has a speed limit of 40mph.

Following the reports of concern regarding this location we carried out a short manual survey where the speed of 40 vehicles were noted in 40 minutes. The highest speed we recorded during the survey was 56mph!

Also noted were three heavy goods vehicles, which exceeded the speed limit at speeds of 47mph, 49mph and 50mph respectively.

The A487 is a major trunk road and over the last 3 years has seen one fatal collision and one slight collision.

We will continue to enforce at this site to encourage compliance with the speed limit. We enforce at the right place, at the right time, for the right reason – to keep the community and all road users safe.

Remember, the world may have changed - but the speed limit remains the same!
