Spotlight On Sites - A48, Castleton, Newport

The A48, Castleton, Newport is one of our mobile camera sites which was established in 2002. This particular road is a 50mph limit and a speed survey conducted at the time showed an average speed of 40.8mph with 18.8 % of vehicles exceeding the speed limit with approximately 1% travelling at speeds in excess of 65mph or more.

Whilst speeds were not excessive compared to other sites there had been a fatal collision, a dozen collisions resulting in serious injury and many minor injury collisions at the site in the previous years. Many of these collisions had excess speed as a causative factor.

The A48 is a major route between Newport and Cardiff. It is a dual carriageway without any central barrier and passes through locations with both commercial and residential areas. Vehicles have to turn across the carriageway in order to access commercial properties, houses and residential homes. There are also numerous bus routes and bus stops along the road.

The most recent speed survey conducted in January 2020 shows an average speed of 49.3mph, with 40% of vehicles exceeding the speed limit and 2.5% of vehicles travelling at speeds of 65mph or more. There has been one further fatality at the site since enforcement began in 2002 but no further serious injury collisions and only a few collisions involving minor injury.

As speeds have increased at this site, regular enforcement will continue until significant reductions are observed in the recorded speeds.

We always enforce in the right place, at the right time, for the right reason to make Welsh roads safer for everyone.
