In January 2021 a speed survey was conducted on a road between Bontnewydd and Caeathro, Gwynedd following community concern reports from local residents about speeding in this area. The survey showed that 72% of vehicles were exceeding the speed limit of 30mph.The average speed was recorded at 33.6mph with 15% of all vehicles travelling at 40mph or more and 6% of vehicles travelling at speeds over 45mph.
No collisions or casualties had been reported at the site but there were a number of factors which raised concerns. The road is used by HGVs and agricultural vehicles accessing sites along the road, there are two football fields on the road which are used by local clubs and schools, the main access to the Gypsy Park Wood country park is located on the road as well as access to a residential care home.
The road links Bontnewydd to Caeathro and has averaged over 2,900 vehicles per day even during the lockdown period.
After taking all factors into consideration it was decided that there were sufficient risk factors at the site to justify speed enforcement.
The site became operational on the 10th March, 2021 and enforcement will continue on a regular basis until the number of drivers exceeding the stated limit is reduced to an acceptable level.
