Spotlight On Sites - Builth Wells
Last week saw the Royal Welsh Agricultural Show celebrating its 100th show at Builth Wells; the largest agricultural shows in the United Kingdom. Every year thousands of visitors and competitors make the annual visit to the small rural town in Powys.
If you travelled to the showground last week you may have seen our enforcement vans around, keeping the roads safe for everyone.
One of our mobile camera sites in this area is situated on the A470 trunk road between Llyswen and Builth Wells where the speed limit is 60mph.
The site was established in 2002. The speed survey conducted at this time showed an average speed of 57 mph, within the limit of 60 mph. Of more concern was the fact that 30% of the traffic was travelling at speeds in excess of the limit whilst 3% of the traffic was travelling at speeds over 75 mph.
In the 3 years prior to the establishment of the site there had been 2 serious accidents at the site where 2 causalities who had received serious or life-changing injuries. Coupled with this were 4 collisions where 6 people sustained minor injuries.
The A470 is a busy trunk road in a rural area of Wales. The road has a number of blind bends and rises and is regularly used by slow moving commercial and agricultural vehicles.
Since the establishment of the site average speeds have fallen to 54 mph and the number of vehicles exceeding the speed limit has fallen from 30% to 18% whilst the number of vehicles travelling at speeds in excess of 75 mph has halved.
More importantly, there have been no collisions within the site boundaries for over 3 years.  The site has achieved its’ aim of reducing road casualties but continued enforcement is required to ensure that the road remains safe for future road-users.
Cameras are there to make roads safer and help to save lives, not to make money or catch motorists out. When you see an enforcement van out on the roads of Wales, remember we are in the right place, at the right time for the right reasons.
