GoSafe has a number of marked vans and motorcycles spread throughout the country which are used at various locations to capture offences of speed and other road traffic violations. To check where the current locations are, please use the Camera search.
The GoSafe vehicles are staffed by fully trained Police Staff or Police Officers, who watch the speed of vehicles passing the vans. Once they form the opinion that the vehicle is exceeding the speed limit, they use the equipment, in order to confirm this suspicion and record it for a prosecution to proceed.
All offences are recorded onto digital storage cards and sent to our Central Ticket Office for processing.
The Speedscope can be trained on vehicles up to 1,000 metres away, although most work is carried out far closer to the enforcement vehicle. The time, date, speed, distance, site coding and whether the vehicle is travelling towards or away from the checkpoint is recorded on the image to produce to the offending driver.
All our cameras have HOTA (Home Office Type Approval) and are subject to calibration for accuracy. All our Calibrations Certificates can be viewed here.
Equipment maintenance
The camera and recording systems used are sealed units and any maintenance is carried out by the manufacturers.
Please note, the official ruling is that calibration checks are not a condition of Home Office Type Approval.
The safety camera equipment used has been through stringent tests by the Home Office scientific department and has been given Home Office Type Approval. To gain this approval equipment in use must be calibrated, used by trained operators and used in accordance with the manufacturer’s requirements. The operators are trained to use the equipment correctly (evidence of procedures available in court) and equipment is calibrated.
