Driver given 8 points and fined £1,034 after shining a laser pen at a GoSafe van
On the morning of Thursday, 21st September 2023, a GoSafe Casualty Reduction Officer was monitoring speeds from a mobile van on the A40 near Carmarthen. They were forced to divert their eyes when a strong green laser light started magnifying through the camera’s viewfinder.
Footage from the speed camera cleared showed a green laser light shining from the driver’s seat of an approaching silver VW Passat. The driver was using a laser pen to target the camera as they drove along the dual carriageway.
The laser was also seen to be affecting a van driver in front of the VW as it bounced several times off the van’s wing mirror.
Further investigation identified the driver as Shaun Dyer, a 48-year-old from the Plymouth area. Dyer was interviewed in October 2023 and admitted the offence of driving without due care and attention.
They failed to appear at Llanelli Magistrates Court on Wednesday, 22nd May and the case was heard in their absence. They were given 8 points and fined £660, in addition to a £264 victim surcharge and £110 court costs.
