Spotlight on sites | Fag l Lane, Flintshire
Following several reports of concern from residents about excessive speeds in the area, a site was established on Fagl Lane, Hope, Flintshire. The site has a 30mph speed limit and enforcement started in April 2021.
A speed survey was conducted and although the average speed was found to be 30mph the number of vehicles exceeding the limit was found to be 43%. 15% of vehicles were travelling at speeds over 36mph and 0.4% at speeds of 45mph or more. What was particularly concerning that these excessive speeds were being recorded at the approach to a 20 mph zone which had been set up around the Castell Alun High School.
Whilst there had been no collisions recorded in the area within the last three years, it was determined that there were sufficient risks and hazards at the site to warrant enforcement.
The site is in a rural area with residential areas on both sides of the road, recreational areas and a residential home. The road is used by slow moving agricultural and goods vehicles servicing the farms in the area.
The road is long and straight which encourages excess speed through the residential area but a big concern was that this straight section leads into the 20mph zone that is intended to safe-guard school children using the Castell Alun High School.
Enforcement will continue at the site until the number of vehicles that are exceeding the limit by an excessive amount is significantly reduced.
